Part 1: William Brade

Module 1: Part 1. In this video a short section of a piece by William Brade is transferred from a string setting to a brass quintet. It demonstrates the first questions that need to be addressed when embarking on an arrangement. It is mostly note-for-note transcription with minor alterations of the parts.

The exercise offers the opportunity to practice this and to begin to make decisions about how to distribute the parts when slight changes can be made to improve the transcription.

As with all the exercises, my version is added in order to compare your results with it. It is likely that your version won't be exactly the same as mine. This may be because you have made a judgment of error but it is also quite possible that there is more than one way to go. Deciding between options is one of the stimulating challenges of arranging. Checking the differences between versions can be very informative; sometimes it is obvious that one choice is the best but often it is a case of personal preference - this is when the individual character of an arranger begins to show. Keep this in mind if you find that you have taken a different option to me.
