Introduction 1: Meet the Tutor

Welcome to the course!

It is designed to show you methods of transferring varying styles of existing music into practical brass ensemble versions. Although it is possible to do this without much previous experience, the results are likely to be so much better practically and musically if it is done with some knowledge and a feel for what works best in this medium. Practice, as ever, is a great help but having some experienced guidance such as is offered in these videos will also help considerably.

The Resources videos which are in this Section give some basic advice about technical aspects of the instruments, tips on writing for brass and some elementary theory. These can be used for learning, refreshing or reference depending on what you already know.

The Module works progressively through examples of straight-forward transcription but gradually introduces aspects of arranging that help to make the transcription more musically comfortable for the player, sound better for the listener and allow some personal, respectful input into the final version.

Most modules have an exercise for you to do to consolidate the learning outcome.
